Where should I post my resume?

Looking for a new job can always be overwhelming – especially during recession and if you haven’t been in the job market, or even updated your resume, in ages. With more folks looking around for jobs and opportunities seemingly shrinking, I thought it was a good time to list the places where you can post your resume and get noticed by recruiters. Recruiters look:

Corporate Job Sites

If you are really passionate about a particular technology and/or company, I believe, this is the best place to start because corporate gaints (Microsoft, Google, Yahoo, IBM, SUN, Oracle) usually have their own career sites where the company’s recruiters always look at the resumes posted in their career sites.

Social Networking Sites

Once primarily considered places for people online to chat, catch up and share photos, social networking sites now are an important tool for finding employment. Corporate recruiters increasingly are scouring professional networking sites such as LinkedIn, MySpace, Facebook and Jobster, looking for the best candidates through references and recommendations. LinkedIn is one of my favorites because it was designed as a tool for professionals to connect. So if you haven’t created a profile yet and you are in the job market, I recommend it. Search for past co-workers, classmates and managers to connect with and reach out to regarding job opportunities. But watch out yourself,  you might want to avoid the potentially embarrassing over-sharing of information that can happen when you use sites like Facebook for both personal and professional purposes, so look into privacy settings on these sites.

Online Job Boards

Listing your resume in online job boards is very important. You can use various online job boards such as CareerBuilder, Monster, Yahoo! Hotjobs, Indeed, Simply Hired, Jobs.com and MSN Careers, just to name a few. Some of these job boards have resume databases. If recruiters have an opportunity that is very niche, they likely won’t post that position online. Instead, they will look through those databases for candidates that have the specific skills. So, consider uploading your resume to their database and make your profile public, even if you don’t necessarily see a posting that you think is a perfect fit for you.

Referrals

Personal professional connection is still the most powerful lure.  Some recruiters feel in-network is the best place to start hunting for new candidates. This can mean referrals from their own employees, their consultants at other companies, or candidates that they have worked with in the past. If you are consultant or an employee seek out to your ex-employers, ex-colleagues and friends who are now at the company you are interested in and have them submit your resume. Or better yet, have them pass it to their contacts who are looking for the skills you can bring to the table.

Events and Job Fairs

Job fairs are often regarded as nonproductive or targeted to entry-level job seekers. In fact, there are fairs for every industry and every level of experience. And best of all, companies send representatives to job fairs because they’re actively looking for new talent; there is hiring going on!

Blogs and Job Forums

Post your projects and publications on your blogs, tech forums, etc. Recruiters love the candidates who are active in the tech community. If you have side projects or if you can answer questions that are posted, upload and get involved. You’ll not only reach recruiters, but hiring managers as well.

Alumni Groups

Join your computer science alumni group if your school has one. I’ve already reached out to a few this year and asked them to advertise our open roles. If your university or department doesn’t have an alumni group, try the social networking sites or different tech boards to see if there are existing groups. Better yet, coordinate your own alumni
group with your school and tell me about it!
